Why are we still misled by hair loss treatments?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The pandemic stress has impacted us in more ways than one \u2014 financially, mentally and even physically. While reports of burnout and strained relationships are on the rise, there\u2019s an unspoken and serious side effect that\u2019s clearly underreported \u2014 hair loss.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent<a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/commentary\/stress-related-more-hair-loss-covid-19-coronavirus-solutions-622636\"> <span class=\"s1\">report<\/span><\/a> by CNA<span class=\"s2\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span>, doctors around the world are seeing a rise in stress-related hair loss. Yet, it\u2019s not taken seriously because it\u2019s not a life-threatening condition \u2014 though it can cause crippling psychological distress.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people seek hair loss treatments in Singapore, they tend to follow this route: beauty salons, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), over-the-counter hair sprays and oral medication \u2014 basically anything to avoid spending a lot of money. Does this sound like you?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be misled. In this article, allow me to explain why most \u2018affordable\u2019 hair loss treatments don\u2019t work, and why I personally recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/ozheanzoey.com\/secretrf\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Secret RF<\/span><\/a> microneedling for hair loss.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Why does hair loss happen? <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common form of hair loss is <b>telogen effluvium<\/b>, hair loss that\u2019s usually caused by:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Childbirth, or postpartum hair loss. This either resolves on its own or transitions into female pattern alopecia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stress<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A diet low in protein and iron<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Side effects from medication<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acute or chronic illness<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, telogen effluvium is temporary and should not persist over 6 months or once its root cause is eliminated. What\u2019s more worrying, however, is <b>androgenic alopecia<\/b>, a common hair loss condition that develops due to hormones and genetics.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Androgenic alopecia is more severe and is usually more prevalent in men as the condition onsets earlier and progresses faster.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/why-do-men-go-bald%2523main-cause-of-balding\"> <span class=\"s1\">95%<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span> of hair loss in men is caused by androgenic alopecia. We refer to androgenic alopecia in men and women respectively as:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Male pattern hair loss<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Balding occurs in a well-defined M shape<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hair loss starts from the front of the head and recedes to the back<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete baldness is possible<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Female pattern hair loss<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Hair is lost from all over the head, starting at the temples and frontal scalp with retention of the frontal hairline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generalised thinning instead of going bald<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We often think alopecia only affects older individuals, but make no mistake \u2014 youths are not spared as well. In fact, because it is a genetic condition, male pattern hair loss usually already starts from adolescence and worsens as boys grow older. In women, while female pattern hair loss begins in midlife, it can start as early as when a woman is in her<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2684510\/\"> <span class=\"s1\">20s<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>When should I seek hair growth treatment in Singapore?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Rate of hair loss<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How many strands of hair are you losing? If you lose an excess of 80-100 strands a day and the rate seems to be getting worse, that\u2019s a warning sign.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Reason behind hair loss<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the reason for your hair fall is situational and easily fixed (e.g. once the stressful situation blows over or once you get on diet on track), I wouldn\u2019t be too worried. However, if the cause is something like genetics, I highly recommend you see a doctor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hair loss from male and female pattern baldness is permanent; the earlier you take action and seek treatment, the more hair you can keep.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many lose faith in hair loss treatments and think this condition is a lost cause due to previous failed treatments. Well, that\u2019s because most conventional hair loss treatments marketed on TV or in beauty salons do not even treat the condition in the first place!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Types of hair loss treatments in Singapore: Chinese vs Western<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In TCM, it is believed that the main cause of hair loss is blood deficiency, so treatment usually revolves around restoring the patient\u2019s blood, kidney \u2018qi\u2019 and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euyansang.com.sg\/en\/restoring-your-crowning-glory\/eysgwhaircare1.html\"> <span class=\"s1\">essence<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/span>. While more research needs to be done on its efficacy,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31781285\/\"> <span class=\"s1\">studies<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/span> show that TCM works best as a complementary therapy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Oral and topical medications<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These include finasteride (oral) and minoxidil (topical). They are commonly prescribed at clinics but merely <b>control instead of treat the condition<\/b>; hair loss will eventually recur once the medications are stopped. In addition, oral medications for hair loss often come with side effects like decreased sex drive, erection problems and rashes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Salon hair treatments<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These only nourish the hair and do nothing for hair loss.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Low-level laser light therapy (LLLT)<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LLLT uses laser light to stimulate hair follicles and encourage hair growth, but efficacy of results are poor and might not be enough for moderate to severe hair loss.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Hair transplant<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A hair transplant actually provides very distinct results, provided the transplant is done well by a skilful surgeon. It\u2019s one of those high risk, high rewards procedures; if anything goes wrong, complications include scarring folliculitis which causes permanent loss of hair. A hair transplant is also extremely expensive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Secret RF microneedling<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Radiofrequency microneedling is a scientific, proven treatment that\u2019s been shown to work for androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>How does Secret RF treat alopecia?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Microneedling RF itself is a therapy that uses tiny needles and radiofrequency waves to create controlled damage on the treatment area. This damage stimulates collagen growth and growth factor production. When used on the scalp, microneedling triggers stem cells in hair follicles, encouraging hair growth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple studies have proven microneedling to be<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33577211\/\"> <span class=\"s1\">effective<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/span> in promoting hair growth. It also promotes the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3996798\/\"> <span class=\"s1\">absorption<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/span> of products used to treat hair loss, hence it\u2019s fantastic either as a main or complementary therapy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my practice, I prefer using Secret RF due to its gold-plated tips which have made a world of difference for clients in terms of comfort and downtime. It is also a microneedling RF technology - which is superior to micro needling alone in hair stimulation because of the additional radiofrequency effect.
